AEOS Completes Glaucoma Surgical and Educational Mission in Latakia, Syria

Aug 9, 2026 | News

The Arab-European Ophthalmological Society (AEOS) successfully concluded a three-day glaucoma surgical and educational mission at Latakia University Hospital, Syria, from 18–20 August 2026.

Combining medical education, patient examinations, and glaucoma surgery, the mission brought local and international expertise together to support patient care and professional learning.

A Collaborative Effort

The mission was conducted in partnership with the Syrian Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR), Latakia University Hospital, and the Faculty of Medicine at Latakia University.

It was led by Dr. Obeda Kailani, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Glaucoma Specialist at King’s College Hospital in London and Scientific Director of AEOS. Working alongside the local ophthalmology team, the programme connected specialised care with the exchange of clinical and surgical experience.

Education, Assessment, and Surgical Care

Over the three days, educational lectures and clinical teaching provided local medical professionals with opportunities to deepen their knowledge of glaucoma and discuss its management.

In collaboration with the hospital’s ophthalmology team, 55 patients were examined and assessed. Patients requiring surgical treatment were identified, and glaucoma surgeries were performed.

By bringing teaching and patient care into the same programme, the mission created opportunities for professional exchange grounded in clinical practice.

Strengthening Ophthalmic Services Through Partnership

The Latakia mission reflects AEOS’s commitment to supporting ophthalmic services through cooperation between Syrian medical professionals and colleagues working internationally.

Alongside providing specialised care, these collaborations create space for shared learning and the development of sustained professional relationships. The expertise and participation of local teams are central to this work.

Thank You to Our Partners and Colleagues

AEOS extends its sincere appreciation to all partner institutions, colleagues, medical teams, and staff at Latakia University Hospital who contributed to the mission.

Their commitment made three days of coordinated education and clinical care possible, reinforcing a shared purpose: to protect sight, share expertise, and strengthen ophthalmic care.
