AEOS 2025 Year in Review: Science, Humanity, and Global Vision

Jul 28, 2026 | News

For the Arab-European Ophthalmological Society (AEOS) e.V., 2025 was a year of shared effort and international collaboration. Through education, practical training, humanitarian work, and institutional partnerships, our community continued to connect scientific knowledge with the needs of patients and healthcare professionals.

Behind these activities stood a common purpose: to strengthen eye care by sharing expertise and supporting the people who deliver it.

Advancing Ophthalmic Education

Education remained central to AEOS’s work throughout 2025. In cooperation with the Ophthalmologists Initiative (SOI), the CME programme supporting the BCSC curriculum offered a structured learning framework for students and young ophthalmologists, connecting foundational knowledge with clinical topics.

Practical workshops complemented this teaching, covering cataract surgery and micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), including more complex surgical techniques. Led by experienced specialists, these sessions created opportunities for participants to develop skills through guided practice.

Ongoing webinars and CME-accredited seminars extended access to professional learning, encouraging colleagues to connect scientific evidence with everyday clinical decisions.

These programmes depended on the expertise and generosity of AEOS members, who contributed their time and experience to the education of fellow ophthalmologists.

Supporting Care and Surgical Capacity in Syria

AEOS’s humanitarian work combined patient care with efforts to strengthen local services.

During 2025, partnerships supported two major Syrian universities through training, equipment, and the development of surgical capacity. This work reflected a commitment to helping local teams sustain services beyond individual visits.

International missions also brought together surgical care and professional education. Alongside interventions to restore sight, participating teams shared knowledge and supported local colleagues—linking immediate patient needs with longer-term development.

Strengthening International Connections

Collaboration across borders remained an important part of the society’s work. Partnerships with universities supported joint research, training programmes, and scientific projects connecting Europe, the Arab world, and beyond.

Exchange opportunities—including mentorships, observerships, and research collaboration—helped students and physicians learn from different clinical and academic environments.

AEOS also contributed to international congresses and symposia, sharing scientific work and strengthening relationships that would support further activities in 2026.

Recognising Our Members and Partners

The achievements of 2025 reflect the dedication of AEOS members. Their clinical expertise, teaching, research, and organisational work helped turn the society’s commitments into practical activities.

We also extend our sincere thanks to our partners and supporters, including:

  • Förderprogramm Klinikpartnerschaften

  • Syrian German Medical Association (SGMA)

  • Ophthalmologists Initiative (SOI)

  • University Eye Hospital Essen

  • Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS)

  • SEMA

  • Multi-Aid Programs (MAPs)

We are grateful to every institution, colleague, and supporter who contributed to this shared work.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Building on the experience of 2025, AEOS’s priorities for 2026 include expanding its workshop programme, developing sustainable partnerships in Syria and internationally, and organising congresses with broad international participation.

Further humanitarian missions and training initiatives will continue to connect specialised care with professional development.

As we look ahead, we remain guided by the same conviction that shaped the past year: progress in ophthalmology grows through shared knowledge, sustained cooperation, and care for the communities we serve.

Together, we see further.
