Advancing Safer Cataract Surgery in Low-Resource Settings: AEOS at ESCRS 2026

Jul 19, 2026 | News

Quality eye care should not depend on where a patient is born. This belief is at the heart of the Arab-European Ophthalmological Society (AEOS) e.V.’s participation in the 44th ESCRS Congress in London.

The instructional course, “Delivering Safe Cataract Surgery in Low-Resource Settings: Practical Solutions for Low-Income Countries,” brings together scientific evidence, surgical experience, and a shared commitment to making cataract care more accessible.

Practical Solutions for Real-World Challenges

For ophthalmologists working in resource-limited environments, delivering safe cataract surgery involves challenges that extend beyond the operating room. Surgical approaches, available resources, and the long-term sustainability of cataract projects all deserve attention.

The AEOS course creates space to explore these issues through practical experience and open discussion. Its programme focuses on four connected areas:

  • Scientific insights and outcomes: Sharing evidence and experience to inform cataract care in low-resource settings.

  • Optimising surgical techniques: Exploring manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS) and its role in these environments.

  • Sustainable support and fundraising: Discussing ways to support cataract projects over the longer term.

  • Collaboration and shared experience: Learning from colleagues who bring different perspectives to common challenges.

Together, these topics connect surgical practice with the broader support needed to sustain care.

A Faculty Bringing Knowledge and Personal Experience

AEOS is proud to bring this conversation to an international audience, with contributions from a faculty whose knowledge and personal experience will guide the session:

  • Ahmad Elsahn

  • Dr. med. Ahmad Rahal, M.D., FEBO, FICO

  • Diana Nazzal, FEBO

  • Obeda Kailani

Their contributions offer an opportunity to examine practical approaches, exchange lessons learned, and discuss how experience can inform work in different clinical settings.

Building Connections for Sustainable Eye Care

Every cataract procedure has a person and a story behind it. The possibility of restoring sight gives this work its purpose—and makes the pursuit of safe, accessible care a shared responsibility.

Through its participation at ESCRS 2026, AEOS aims to strengthen dialogue between colleagues from Europe, the Arab region, and the wider international ophthalmic community. By bringing evidence and lived professional experience into the same conversation, the course supports a collective effort towards sustainable eye care.
